When A Loved One Passes

1. Call the police or fire department if the death occurs at home.

2. Call your pastor and other immediate family members.

3. Contact or designate someone to call your funeral home of choice.

4. Have all your vital statistical information handy for the death certificate.

5. Know if the deceased wanted to be an organ /tissue donor? If so tell the first responders immediately.

6. Let your funeral director know if you want your loved one to be embalmed, cremated or have a direct burial without embalming.

7. If you desire any public viewing of your loved one, you must sign the release and embalming authorization provided by the funeral director. If you are not sure what you want, request the funeral home to refrigerate the remains for 24 hours, allowing you to make your final decision.

The Day After Your Loss

1. Contact the funeral home to establish the date and time to begin your funeral arrangement counseling.

2. Know the date, time, and location where you would like to have your funeral service.

3. You will need your insurance policy(s) or another method of payment.

4. You will need to gather your information and pictures for your loved ones obituary.

5. Do you have a cemetery choice?

6. Choose the preferred clothing that you want your loved one to wear.

7. Do you have a make-up preference?

8. Do you want a repast? If so who will be in charge and where will it be held?

9. Where will the family be picked up if transportation services are secured?

10. Be selective and make smart choices.
